It's no secret that Christians in this country receive all sorts of little bonuses from the government. They get to have their religion endorsed on currency and in the pledge, they get special access to public land, are infinitely more likely to be elected to public office, get special consideration with their half baked "theories", get free, unmonitored handouts to do unspecified good work,...
And now, it seems, knowing your bible can also get you out of jail time. That's right.
An Ohio Judge decided that a man caught using a stolen credit card was trustworthy enough to be released on an appearance bond because he could recite Psalm 23. Not much of a challenge given that it's one of the more popular passages out there.
Perhaps the judge should have picked something more obscure. Perhaps something on, oh, I don't know, stealing?
That's crazy. Really crazy. That really pisses me off in fact.
ReplyDeleteIt reminds me of the time in high school when me and another kid got in trouble. We were sent to the dean's office. The dean at the time was an Irish man, and when we both appeared in front of him, he asked us both if we were Irish. I responded no, while the other kid responded yes. I got detention and the other kid got to go back to class.
The other difference is that a high school dean doing this sort of thing is borderline funny. A judge however should be more responsible than that.
This is truly sad.
Yay, Ohio!
