I doubt that religion had to do much with the incident, except insofar as it was the premise of the attack. Rather, this guy is clearly mentally ill and some other thing would have caused the same outcome. Thus, the real question is not whether there are deleterious effects due to religion (there are), but what can be done to improve mental health care.
